Nominations are now open for the 2008 Texas Environmental
Excellence Awards (TEEA), the state's highest environmental
achievement. Administered by the Texas Commission on Environmental
Quality (TCEQ), the awards annually pay tribute to projects across
the state that significantly reduce waste, prevent pollution, and
conserve natural resources.
Now in its fifteenth year, the TEEA recognize proven initiative
and innovation in environmental programs conducted by individuals
and communities as well as companies and organizations. Past
recipients submitted winning projects that have significantly
reduced water consumption, energy use, or waste, and/or contributed
to improved air quality in Texas through measurable efforts that
outperform and do more than achieve regulatory compliance.
"This year we're recognizing the hometown heroes who work
tirelessly to tackle environmental challenges," said Buddy Garcia,
chairman of the TCEQ. "The efforts of these individuals,
communities, organizations and companies are increasingly crucial
to the well-being of this beautiful state we all cherish."
"One of the highlights of this year's event will be the second
presentation of the Gregg A. Cooke Memorial Award for Environmental
Excellence," said Larry R. Soward, TCEQ commissioner. "Gregg, a
former EPA Region 6 Administrator, exemplified Texans who take
environmental responsibility personally."
For award winners, the public recognition and marketing benefits
of winning the award can be significant.
"Receiving the Texas Environmental Excellence Award has brought
forth further opportunities for conservation on Fort Hood," said
Dr. William Fox, Senior Research Scientist with the Texas Water
Resources Institute, and winner of the 2006 Agriculture award. "In
partnership with Fort Hood, we were able to obtain an additional
$1.1 million in fiscal year 2007 to expand conservation activities
on the installation."
