The
Lower Sabinal River
|
Project Background
Segment 2210 of the Lower Sabinal River begins near the city of
Sabinal in Uvalde County and ends at its confluence with the Frio
River in Frio County. Water quality testing has found that the use
of the Lower Sabinal River as a source of drinking water is not
fully supported due to high concentrations of nitrate-nitrogen.
The goal of this project is to reduce nitrate-nitrogen to levels
that make the river useful as a source of drinking water treatment
facilities.

TMDL for the Lower Sabinal River
The goal of a TMDL is to restore the full use of a water body
that has limited quality in relation to one or more of its uses.
The TMDL defines an environmental target by determining the extent
to which a certain pollutant must be reduced in order to attain and
maintain the affected use. Based on this environmental target, the
state develops an implementation plan to mitigate anthroprogenic
sources of pollution within the watershed and restore full use of
the water body.
This TMDL was adopted by the Commission on August 10, 2005. It
was approved by the EPA on October 13, 2005, and is part of the
state's Water Quality Management Plan.
