Mineral Wool Insulation Mfg. Co.

This former insulation manufacturing facility in the City of Rogers, Bell County, has just completed the remedial investigation and feasibility study phase of the state Superfund program.

Site Summary

The Mineral Wool Insulation Manufacturing Company site is southeast of the intersection of Shaw Road and Neroc Road within the City of Rogers. The approximately 19-acre site is surrounded by residential areas along the east and south, inactive agricultural fields to the north and west, and railroad tracks along the southern border.

Several large piles of spent iron shot waste are located in the eastern section of the site. In the central section is a shed, slag storage bays, two former cooling ponds, and a warehouse foundation. North of the warehouse foundation is a household dump area.

Superfund Registry and Investigation

In 2006, the TCEQ proposed the site to the State Superfund Registry and constructed a perimeter fence with warning signs to limit unauthorized access. In 2007, the TCEQ removed a former aboveground storage tank, blast furnace, and cooling tank and demolished and disposed onsite buildings. The remedial investigation to determine the nature and extent of contamination was conducted from 2012 to 2017. The feasibility study to evaluate cleanup options was completed in 2017.

Current Status

The site remains proposed to the state Superfund registry. Large volumes of waste and affected soil and sediment remain on the property. A public meeting to discuss the proposed remedial action will be announced in 2018.
